Famous Portuguese custard tart (pastel da nata) and a cup of sipping hot chocolate at Manteigaria in Porto, Portugal

Best Restaurants in Porto, Portugal: A Frequent Visitor’s Guide

Need help finding some of the best restaurants and local spots in Porto, Portugal? Over the last 3 years, I have spent over four months in Porto. That is a TON of meals!

I think one of the best things about traveling to a new place is being able to experience all of the different foods. So after lots of independent research (I mean, somebody has to do it, right?), here are my favorite spots.

Most of these places I’ve just found in my research over the years, some I’ve been lucky enough to just stumble on, and others have been suggested to me by the locals I have met along the way. But most importantly, I’ve actually been to every one of these places personally (some more than once!).

I’ve tried to provide a mix of budget, moderately priced and a few splurge meals. Most of what I recommend is casual, because that’s just my style of travel 90% of the time. Consider this your personal food travel guide and let’s plan your culinary journey around Porto! Who’s hungry? 😋

Best Coffee/Brunch Restaurants in Porto, Portugal

Pastel da nata and hot sipping chocolate from Manteigaria in Porto, Portugal

Manteigaria

After a LOT of taste tests, I think I’ve finally decided that Manteigaria makes the best pastel de nata, the popular egg custard tart of Portugal. These have a perfect balance of warm and creamy in the middle with a flaky, crispy buttery crust.

Sprinkle with a little cinnamon and powdered sugar, and enjoy with a latte (“galao”) or their hot sipping chocolate. You may as well get a sleeve of them for takeaway too, because one is never enough!

Plate of French toast, yogurt and berries, coffee and orange juice at Nicolau in Porto, Portugal

Nicolau

In addition to salads, burgers, tacos and rice bowls, Nicolau serves a delicious brunch ALL DAY. I can’t resist their French toast with yogurt and fruit, with a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice.

They offer gluten-free and vegetarian options as well, and have several locations around Portugal.

Exterior view of Majestic Cafe in Porto, Portugal

Majestic Cafe

Established in 1921, Majestic Cafe was a favorite meeting place for artists and writers. J.K. Rowling is said to have spent much of her time here while working on the first Harry Potter book.

It’s overpriced and touristy, but the interior is stunning, so it is still worth a visit to me. Try to go when they first open and you’ll have the place all to yourself, for a few minutes at least!

Table of pastries and coffee from Padaria Ribeiro

Padaria Riberio

Located just around the corner from Livraria Lello bookstore, this is a great spot for a delicious pastry and a coffee. We tried the pastel de nata, carrot cake (gengibre e cenoura) and the mini chocolate-filled Bola de Berlim.

You can order and eat at the counter, or opt for table service outside or in the space next door.

Breakfast plate of bread, beans, eggs, sausage and jam

Do Norte Cafe by Hungry Biker

This is a cozy, centrally located brunch spot with a cool, hipster vibe. I found it to be reasonably priced, especially for the generous portions they serve.

It definitely fills up quickly, so be prepared to queue, or try to go right at opening.

Plate of 4 pasties de natal and 2 coffees at Confeitaria do Bolhao

Confeitaria do Bolhao

A local tour guide told me this was the best place to get a famous pastel de nata. I don’t know that it’s my *favorite*, but it definitely ranks in my Top 5!

You can order and eat at the counter, or head straight to the back for table service. Once you are finished, take your ticket to the front register and pay on your way out.

Plate of eggs Benedict and fruit and a mimosa at Swallow Brunch

Swallow Brunch

This is WAS the best brunch in Porto! The owners and waitstaff are super friendly, and the food is consistently delicious. They offer classic options, such as eggs benedict with fried potatoes and fruit, pancakes, and even chicken & waffles.

I last ate here in May 2024, but found out in March 2025 that they have permanently closed their doors. I’m choosing to leave it in this guide on the off chance that something changes before I return again.

Best Lunch/Dinner Restaurants in Porto, Portugal

Rows of vendors at Mercado do Bolhoa in Porto, Portugal

Mercado do Bolhao

This market is a gem! In addition to the wine, fish, meat, cheese, bakery and produce stalls, Bolhoa Market now features restaurants and shops on its upper levels. And you never know when you will stumble upon some live music or entertainment.

My favorite way to enjoy the market is to grab a glass of vinho verde and just walk around sampling different foods. This is a great way to DIY your own progressive lunch and spend a memorable afternoon in Porto.

Outer facade of A Bolina restaurant in Porto, Portugal

A Bolina

Just a short walk from the Funicular dos Guindas, this is a great little spot right on the Douro River.

They offer tapas style traditional Portuguese dishes and other shareable small plates. Choose a bottle of wine from their extensive wine list and, if seated outside, enjoy amazing views of the Dom Luis I bridge.

Reservations encouraged.

Cachorrinho (special Portuguese hot dog) and a pint of Super Bock at the counter at Gazela in Porto, Portugal

Gazela

If Anthony Bourdain says you have to eat here, then you have to. Right? A beloved spot for cachorrinhos since 1962, this place is a must for a quick, cheap but delicious bite.

The “Special Dog” starts with a baguette, toasted panini style with sausage and cheese. It is then brushed with spicy oil and best served with hot fries and a cold Super Bock.

Of the 2 locations, I prefer a counter seat at the original. Trust me, you will visit more than once!

Plate of rotisserie chicken and French fries

Pedro dos Frangos

This is a popular spot with locals and visitors alike. Don’t let the line intimidate you, as it moves pretty quickly!

The star of the show here is obviously the rotisserie chicken. Drizzle some of their homemade piri piri sauce on top for a spicy kick. Paired with a salad, fries and a basket of bread, this is a simple, delicious and very affordable meal.

Table with Portuguese steak sandwich (prego), French fries and a glass of red wine

Pregar

Prego no pão is a garlicky, Portuguese steak sandwich, and Pregar is THE place to go in Porto to get one. Their’s is served medium rare with ham and cheese and an optional fried egg.

Add fries and a beer or glass of wine and you have one of my favorite meals in Porto. Tip: the horseradish lime mayo is a nice accompaniment!

Depending on the time of day/year, it can fill up fast (it’s small), but they do take reservations. There have been times where I’ve been lucky though and got a table right away!

Largo São Domingos 96, https://www.pregar.pt/

Table with 2 pizzas and drinks

Il Pizzaiolo

Obviously this is not Portuguese, but sometimes you just get a craving for pizza! Located at the base of Clerigos Church, Il Pizzaiolo offers patio and indoor seating for lunch (12-3pm) and dinner (7-11pm).

My favorites are the garlic bread with mozzarella, Pollo pizza, and pear & gorgonzola ravioli.

Tip: weekends are busy; reservations for dinner are encouraged, or try to go early.

Portuguese Francesinha sandwich at the counter of Cafe Santiago in Porto

Cafe Santiago

Cafe Santiago is a popular place to try the famous Francesinha (“little French girl”). This sandwich consists of bread, bologna, sausage, beef steak, ham, cheese, & sunny side up egg, which is then smothered in a gravy-like sauce.

It definitely lives up to its nickname, “heart attack on a plate!”

Tip: grab a stool at the counter and you will be amazed to see just how many Francesinhas these guys can crank out!

Table set for one at Cantina 32 in Porto, Portugal

Cantina 32

Tucked away yet in the center of it all, Cantina 32 has something for everyone. The unique decor and understated ambiance draws you in as soon as you enter.

This is the perfect dinner choice for a mixed group of people. There is lots to choose from and they encourage sharing! Don’t sleep on the salted banana butter and bread; it’s delicious!

Tip: They do have a table for 1, which is perfect for solo travelers!

Reservations strongly encouraged.

Entrance to McDonald's Imperial in Porto, Portugal

McDonald’s Imperial

Yes, McDonald’s Imperial made the list. Not necessarily for its culinary prowess, but for the historic building it is located in.

Known as one of the most beautiful McDonald’s in the world, it’s worth stepping inside for a peek at its beautiful stained glass and crystal chandeliers. Plus it’s always fun to see different menu options at McDonald’s around the world. This one serves soup and beer!

Door to Chama, a restaurant in Porto, Portugal

Chama

CHAMA offers a super fun & unique dining experience. Think Michelin star quality but at your best friend’s kitchen table. The dishes are inventive and fresh, and the staff are so kind and attentive.

The menu is chef’s choice and rotates every night. I’ve been 4 times (can you tell I’m a fan?), and I think I’ve only been served one of the courses twice. The best part is, you’ll get a 6 or 7 course meal for €45 (alcohol not included).

Reserve early online; walk-ins are rare!

Scallop with caviar and saffron sauce plated inside a seashell

Ostras & Coisas

If you are looking for a large variety of fresh seafood in the city center, this is an excellent choice. It’s a little pricier, but worth it in my opinion.

We tried the scallop with caviar and saffron sauce, the tempura squid and grilled fish of the day. The fish was filleted and plated for us at the table and was cooked to perfection!

Rua da Fábrica nº73 https://www.ostrasecoisas.pt

Bifana (Portuguese pork sandwich) and a glass of red sparkling wine

Taxca

Casual and affordable, Taxca offers local favorites like bifana, octopus salad and Caldo Verde in a relaxed atmosphere.

This is a great option if you are looking for a place to grab a quick (but delicious) bite and a beer.

Plate of steak chimichurri, salad and sweet potato fries from Honest Greens

Honest Greens

Honest Greens is my go to spot when I am craving something fresh and, well, green!

A few of my favorites are the delicious free-range grilled steak with chimichurri, hummus with veggies, and sweet potato fries with beet ketchup. I also just recently discovered their ginger honey goat cheese salad with chicken.

If you are looking for fast casual, with lots of healthy options including plant-based and vegetarian, Honest Greens delivers. And they are a chain, so you’ll see them all over!

Plate of sushi rolls topped with mango and strawberry slices

Manga

Located at the entrance to Rua de Cedofeita, Manga is my favorite sushi spot in Porto.

It is kind of hidden in plain sight (the door says O Caçula), but it’s there I promise!

Try the Spicy Uramaki and Hot Salmon roll, or opt for the tasting menu to get a little bit of everything.

Praça de Carlos Alberto 47 https://instagram.com/mangasushihouse

Bifana (Portuguese pork sandwich), fries and a pint of beer

Conga

Conga is THE place for a bifana in Porto.

A bifana is made with thinly shaved pork that has been boiled and stewed in a slightly spicy sauce. The result is a messy, juicy, delicious sandwich that is adored by locals and tourists alike.

a plate of shrimp tacos and a bottle of Modelo (Mexican beer)

Duello

If you have a craving for Mexican food, then search no more. The menu is simple, but offers many delicious options such as nachos to share, Al pastor and shrimp tacos (& quesadillas), an extensive margarita list, and several dessert options.

I tried the chips & beans appetizer, shrimp tacos & a Modelo (€20 total) and it made me very happy! (Good) Mexican food is hard to find in Portugal, so Duello definitely hit the spot!

1927 Gelataria Portuense

Gelataria Portuense is a traditional shop where the gelato is produced in-house by one of only two Effe machines in Portugal. This revolutionary machine was invented in 1927 by Otello Cattabriga, an ingenious Italian inventor.

Ana, the owner, trained in Italy to become a gelatiere. A year later, she returned to Porto and 1927 Gelataria Portuense was born.

She uses local, seasonal products, and her flavors rotate often. I’ve been to Italy several times, and dare I say that her gelato is honestly the best I’ve ever had!

a cone of gelato from Amorino, made in a flower petal design

Amorino

Amorino is a chain gelato shop found all over the world, with consistent flavors and quality. They are known for their unique “rose” shaped gelato cones.

A bonus about Amorino is that you can choose as many different flavors as petals on a flower. They base the price on the selected size, not number of flavors.

It may seem counterintuitive at first, but when you enter the shop, make sure to queue and pay at the register first. You’ll then hand your ticket to the staff behind the gelato counter, where they will prepare your order.

Chocolate truffles

Chocolateria Ecuador

Founded in Porto, this “bean-to-boutique” chocolateria offers artisanal treats such as truffles, bars and even hot chocolate.

For an elevated and unique experience, consider booking a tasting. The staff will pair some of their best chocolate with a port, Ginja or coffee.

Best Bar/Nightlife Options in Porto, Portugal

I’m not really into going out to clubs anymore, so I’m afraid I don’t have much to share in that department. My idea of “nightlife” is hanging out in a chill wine bar or brewery, and bonus points if there is a good view. Porto has tons of amazing spots to enjoy a drink that don’t require staying out all night 😉

Small groups of people spread out in the grassy park below Clerigos Tower in Porto, Portugal

BASE Porto

This is one of my favorite places in the city, which happens to also be in my favorite neighborhood in Porto. BASE is a casual, kiosk-type bar in the park at the base of Clerigos Tower.

When the weather is nice, people spread out on the lawn under the shade of the gnarly, twisted olive trees. There are also regular tables with umbrellas, and cushioned benches set up perfectly for socializing.

They offer beer, wine, sangria and other cocktails. The prices may be a little higher than other spots, but the views and ambiance cannot be beat!

People dining at Ponte Pensil with views of the Douro River

Ponte Pensil

Ponte Pênsil was once a suspension bridge that connected the banks of Porto and Gaia. Located on one of the granite pillars of that former bridge is Bar da Ponte Pênsil.

Take a cocktail break here and enjoy unmatched views of the Dom Luis I bridge and Gaia on the other side. This is also one of the coolest spots to watch the sun go down on the Douro River.

Prices may be a bit high, but just consider it the “view tax” 😉

Empty cobblestone street with string lights hovering overhead

Rua da Galeria de Paris

If you are looking for nightlife, this is the street to be on. Many bars and clubs, such as Alma, Casa do Livro and the Texas-themed Yellow Rose Bar can be found here.

It’s usually fairly quiet during the day, but turns into a bustling street scene at night. Most establishments on this stretch stay open until the wee hours of the morning.

Mercado Beira-Rio

Located on the riverfront in Vila Nova de Gaia, this is a combination food hall and market. It’s a great place to stop for a snack from one of the many vendors. Or grab a beer and go sit in the grass or on a bench at the edge of the river.

Tip: there is a small, public restroom inside at the far right end.

Terrace bar of Vincci Ponte de Farro overlooking Dom Luis I bridge and Douro River

Vincci Ponte de Ferro

This beautiful hotel is located just below the monastery in Gaia (see my hotel guide for more details).

The drinks in the lobby bar are standard hotel prices (so definitely not cheap). But if you are looking for stunning views of the bridge and the Douro River below, their outdoor terrace has some of the best.

Or consider a stay here and enjoy the same views from their outdoor pool! 😍

Unique Food & Drink Activities

Walking Food Tour

Yet another solid recommendation from the legendary Anthony Bourdain. Andre and his team at Taste Porto have been leading food tours in Porto since 2013. They are passionate about Portuguese food, and are proud to showcase the people and stories that make up the scene.

I’ve toured with them 4 times over the years and experienced both the food and craft beer tours. It’s a great way to get introduced to the city of Porto and what it has to offer. I promise you won’t be disappointed!

Sunset Cruise on the Douro

Once you make your way down to the Ribeira, you’ll see many operations offering the 50-minute Six Bridges boat tour. For €20, you and 50-60 other passengers can cruise up and down the Douro listening to recorded commentary. I’ve done it (twice!), and I definitely think every first time visitor should see Porto from the water.

But if you want a more memorable, less crowded experience, consider this semi-private yacht tour. You’ll enjoy being on the water for twice as long (2 hours) with no more than 12 people. With comfortable seating and ample time for gorgeous photo ops, you can sip on a glass of sangria while learning about the 6 bridges that cross the Douro in Porto. Plus, you can opt to be out at sunset, which is such a beautiful way to admire the city!

Cooking Class

I actually haven’t taken this class personally, but I have friends that have raved about it. I did take a similar pastel de nata cooking class in Lisbon and it is still one of my favorite memories. So if you enjoy cooking or baking, I highly recommend taking a class while you’re in Porto!

Restaurants & Bars in Porto That Are Still on My List!

  • O Caracas – right around the corner from Passeio das Virtudes; small, family-run restaurant with rotating daily menu (usually one meat and one fish dish offered per day) and homemade desserts
  • Delirium Cafe Porto – Belgian brewpub, Porto location opened in May 2024
  • Arco das Verdades – wine bar with small plates and gorgeous river views
  • The Door – recommended by an Instagram friend; food looks amazing; interesting twist on some traditional cuisine (Portuguese sausage sliders, roast beef focaccia, Argentinian empanadas); close to Clerigos area

Final Thoughts

Whew! If you have made it this far, I’m sure you can deduce that 1) I love to eat and try new restaurants and 2) I am madly in love with Porto, Portugal! Hopefully I’ve been able to highlight what I think are some of the best restaurants in Porto. So now you’re ready to plan some unforgettable meals and experiences of your own when you visit Porto.

As you can see from the previous section, I am always on the lookout for new spots to try. I visit Porto often, and my list (& Google map pins) is constantly growing! So make sure you have subscribed to my email list so you won’t miss any future updates I make to this post! And if there are any Porto restaurants that I need to check out, please let me know in the comments!
